Introducing Standalone Macro Analysis in AI Analyst Chat

6 min readAlex Hoffmann, Co-Founder and CEO

AI Analyst Chat now supports Standalone Macro Analysis. Ask about inflation, growth, monetary policy, or energy markets without naming a company. Chat researches the question using your enabled data sources and attributes the answer to those sources.

Previously, Chat required a company tie. That left a gap in the way equity analysts work: research often starts with the economic backdrop, then turns to the companies exposed to it. You can now follow that sequence in one conversation.

Start with a macro question

You can ask questions such as:

  • “What risks to growth and inflation are major central bank leaders highlighting in their recent speeches?” Chat can draw on Central Bank Speeches for their stated views.
  • “How have US inflation and real GDP growth changed over the past four quarters?” FRED provides the economic series for the comparison.
  • “How exposed is global oil supply to a disruption in the Strait of Hormuz?” EIA provides energy production, consumption, and trade data to inform the analysis.

Then bring the findings into your coverage. Follow an inflation question with “What does this backdrop mean for the pricing power and margins of the companies I cover?” Or use an energy-market analysis to frame a question about a particular producer's earnings. The macro research gives you context for the company work that follows.

Coverage determines what Chat can answer

Before research starts, Chat checks whether your enabled sources can plausibly cover the question. If coverage is uncertain, it proceeds with research. If the available sources cannot cover it, Chat declines rather than answering from the model's memory.

Stop the Hype

Hype: Chat can now answer any macro question.

Reality: Standalone Macro Analysis depends on the sources you have enabled. It supports a broader starting point for research, with source attribution and limits set by the available data.

Marvin Labs remains an equity research platform. This release makes it easier to establish the macro backdrop before testing a company thesis. It does not replace the specialist feeds and tools a dedicated macro desk may need.

Sources Chat can draw on

The recent additions to the connector catalog give Chat both economic series and source documents for macro research. The hosted sources below are on by default, with a switch for each one in settings. Each source also has a detail page in the app.

Economic and market series

A search now runs across every enabled series source at once and ranks the results together to find relevant data for questions about inflation, yields, or oil. Each result names its source. Forecast and unpublished periods are marked as such.

  • FRED. US and international economic indicators from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis: CPI, GDP, unemployment, policy rates, and Treasury yields, to read a company's numbers against the macro backdrop.
  • EIA. Energy statistics from the Energy Information Administration: US petroleum, natural gas, coal, and electricity, alongside EIA's short- and long-term forecasts. International data covers production, consumption, trade, reserves, and emissions across 268 countries and regions.
  • Ember. Global electricity data: how every country makes its power, by fuel, with installed capacity, demand, power-sector emissions and grid carbon intensity. Annual coverage for 215 countries and monthly coverage for 88.
  • CFTC. Futures positioning from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission: the weekly Commitments of Traders report, including long, short, and net positions across reporting markets.
  • Bundesbank. German government bond yields from the Deutsche Bundesbank: the daily term structure of listed Federal securities, with maturities from one to thirty years, providing daily detail beyond the monthly series available through FRED.

Policy documents

  • Central Bank Speeches. Official speeches from nine major central banks. List speeches, read their text, and inspect attributed passages about monetary policy and the economy.
  • GovInfo. Full text of US federal legislation from the US Government Publishing Office: search published bill text and read the relevant legislation.

Together, these sources support an initial assessment of inflation, growth, policy, energy, and legislation. If your research needs a series or document collection beyond that coverage, you can add your own sources through connectors.

Add a source we do not host

If a series or a document collection you rely on is missing, you can connect it yourself. Third-party sources in the catalog use your existing account with the provider, through a sign-in or one pasted key. A source the catalog does not list can still be added by hand, the same way you connect your own MCP servers.
