Company Relationships and Web Search in AI Chat

4 min readAlex Hoffmann, Co-Founder and CEO

New in AI Analyst Chat: company relationships (competitors, suppliers, partners, customers), web search for qualitative context, arrow key input history, and the ability to change your question mid-answer.

Company relationships

Ask Marvin about a company's competitors, suppliers, partners, or customers. Marvin combines web search and its own knowledge to identify relationships, then backs them up with what company executives actually said in earnings calls, filings, and press releases.

Try questions like "Who are Nike's main competitors in North America?" or "Which suppliers does Apple mention most frequently?" You get the full picture — broad industry context plus direct references from management discussions and analyst Q&A.

The result: relationship answers that go beyond a simple list. You see who the competitors or suppliers are, and you see the executive quotes and filing references that confirm it.

Web search for qualitative context

AI Chat can now search the web for news, industry developments, and product context.

A few boundaries worth stating up front. Web search is used strictly for qualitative context: recent news articles, product announcements, industry developments, regulatory changes. It does not source financial numbers, earnings data, analyst opinions, or third-party price targets from the web. All financial data in Marvin Labs continues to come from primary documents only.

Say you're researching a company and want to know about a recent product launch or a regulatory development that hasn't appeared in a filing yet. Web search fills that gap. When Marvin pulls from the web, results are attributed to their source so you can tell what came from a news article and what came from a primary document.

Stop the Hype

What web search does: Fetches news articles, press releases from company websites, product announcements, and industry reporting for qualitative context.

What web search does not do: Source financial metrics, earnings estimates, price targets, analyst ratings, or any quantitative data. Those come exclusively from primary financial documents ingested through Automated Data Import.

Arrow key history and interrupt to ask something new

Two input improvements for longer research sessions.

Arrow keys. Press up or down in the chat input to scroll through your previous messages. Useful when you're running similar queries across multiple companies. Ask "What drove margin expansion in Q4?" for one company, arrow up, change the ticker, send again.

Change your mind mid-answer. You can type and send a new message while Marvin is still responding. The current answer stops and your new question takes over. No need to wait for a response to finish before moving on.
